Welcome to Your Daughter’s Bookshelf. I am Stefanie, a former public relations hack and mom/chauffeur/cook/maid/ATM to one teenager, one almost-teenager, and one might-as-well-be-a-teenager. What started as just wanting to know what my children were reading has turned into a full-blown obsession with the genres of Young Adult and pre-teen fiction.
I started this blog for several reasons: my husband was threatening to throw out my books unless I did something about the volume on the shelves (and under the bed and behind the chairs), so I figured this would give me an excuse to keep buying new ones. Also, one of my BFFs started telling me to get off my ass. So I did.
The name of the blog is a reminder NOT to walk by your children’s bookshelves; just because the jacket says “young adult” or “9-11 years” or “middle grade”, does not mean that there isn’t an amazing story hidden inside. A good book is a good book. And YA has some of the most imaginative, well-written stories out there.
On this blog, you will find my musings on the books that cross my path, written for the adult with the teen still trapped inside. Also, I hope that you might find recommendations for your own children when they moan “I have nothing to read…”
There will be no reviews of Harry Potter, the Hunger Games, or Twilight on this blog. The first two have been reviewed and made into movies and discussed and blogged about endlessly, and I have nothing new to add. The third series had sparkly vampires in it. ‘Nuff said. I didn’t make it past the second chapter. There are some days when I wish I could un-read something…
At times, I will review entire series at once, at others, the individual books in them.
I may not love all the books I review, but will always try to find some positives in them. That’s not to say I won’t point out cons along with the pros, but it is damn hard to write a book, and I am not about to crap on anyone else’s efforts. Unless I can do it respectfully. At least, that is my plan. (Twilight is an exception. See above.)
I have a weird love/obsession for proper grammar, spelling , and punctuation. So if you spot a typo in my blog, PLEASE let me know! Editors welcome!
I hope you enjoy my reviews, but if you don’t, let me know! Argue with me! Tell me why I’m right or wrong! It’s a book club, and all opinions are welcome. (Just don’t be mean to anyone, please, including the authors of the books.)
Also, I have started a facebook page about the blog. If you “like” it, you will be notified of new reviews as they are posted. I think. You probably know that. If you knew me, you would laugh at the fact I even wrote “I have a facebook page…” facebook.com/yourdaughtersbookshelf
You can also follow me on twitter if you like.

Welcome, and thanks for stopping by. Please enjoy!

Oh, I do! I have so many that I revisit, I sometimes feel I am missing out on new ones. But you find out so much more about a book the more you read it! I hope you enjoy my blog thanks for following.

Thank you for reading my blog – I laughed when I read about your husband threatening to throw out your books and the title of your blog – I’m a widow and it’s my daughters who keep telling me I must cull the bookshelves! We wordsmiths and book lovers must stick together – may you always be blessed with books or book vouchers as gifts!

Thank you, I totally agree. My husband bought me a kindle, thinking it would stem the tide… Unfortunately (for him), I’ll read an e-book, and end up buying it as a real book if I love it! It hasn’t shrunk my shelves at all… Tell your daughters to keep their hands off! There is something about a pile of books beckoning to you that makes the world ok. 🙂

Yes. I applaud your blog’s premise. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve a lot more respect for Young Adult Lit. Oh, and thanks for liking my post “Avalanche.”

I thought the way you described the poems and the premise to be very intriguing. I’m not always a big poetry reader, it has to really grab me. I’m definitely going to have look. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Stefanie, thanks for your follow, and that led me here. 🙂 I used to have a home library (I actually converted a room into a mini library 🙂 ) but my husband complained that the books were taking up too much space. Moreover, I often had friends and relatives who borrowed them (as if it’s a real library) but didn’t return. Thus, I demolished my “library” and donated all the books to the national library. Hmm… You are the first in this blogosphere to know about my pre-loved “home library”! 😀
So glad to know you! Am following you so that I can get to know you better. 😀

Thank you so much for stopping by! I love the story of your home library – I have a dream one in my head, but trying to convince my husband of the idea is futile. 😦 Oh well, a dream one can be anything I want, at least, and change daily… :)) I look forward to reading more your posts – you have a lovely blog.

Hi there, I love your idea for this blog. If you do not mind me asking, what is the favorite book that you have reviewed so far?

Thank you! Wow, that is actually a tough question… I have so many that I love, but probably at or near the top is The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein. It’s a two book series by Kenneth Oppel. It is FANTASTIC. From page one on, almost impossible to put down. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and comment.

Thank you so much, I have only started having a nose round your blog, my fav “kids” book is the Percy Jackson series, and I have a special place in my heart for Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl. Although with the famous five I do tend to want to pummel the boys for being so sexist

I love the blog name.
Children’s and Teen’s Literature is vitally important. They are the future and all that, so they deserve quality literature that is educational, insightful, and reflective of the world in which they live.

I am so glad you pointed out the fact that people of any age can read YA fiction. I was very hesitant to post any reviews on my blog of this genre as I am eighteen years old. I honestly got so hung up on the ages printed on the books, but it’s refreshing to hear someone point out that it’s okay! I have two posts on YA fiction so far and will definitely be doing more!
I love your blog by the way!

Thank you! I really believe anyone can read anything, as long as they enjoy it. My mom always said “I don’t care if you read a comic book, a novel or a cereal box, just read,” and I totally agree with her. 😀

Hey… I am sufficiently impressed! Please stop by the website for the Greater Rocky Mountain Horror Writers Amateur Press Association (grmhwapa.wordpress.come) and see if you wouldn’t eventually find a niche as a reviewer there…Our goals are to include reviewers, at least as a contact point…we are just starting up and it will take a bit of time before we have major web page to reflect our needs, but I am headhunting right now….doth your head fit upon mine pike?

Thank you for swinging by my little corner of the information highway. I’ve since been hired by MoviePilot and am actually getting paid. Granted it’s not by a lot, but whatever. Looking forward to reading your reviews and other materials you put forward. I’ve only recently taken up pleasure reading again, mainly to help out with my own work, but it has been an absolute joy to rediscover the printed page. Salem’s Lot was amazing.

Lol yes, that is great that you don’t review books that have so, so much hype! I did one a long time ago, and then more recently I was considering writing a review for Matched but then actually was like “wait everyone already knows everything about this book” haha.

True! Sometimes you go to write a review and think “there is nothing new to say….” Thanks for stopping by!
